This project was conceived by the State Government to facilitate the business of Government, Education, Commerce, Training and Health systems.
 
The project is a satellite- based communication facility for delivery of a broad range of multimedia services encompassing Video, Audio and Data.
 
The Jigawa State Broadband Network project was initialized because of the State Governments desire for rapid socio-economic growth and global competitiveness in the area of acquisition, absorption and application of information technology. The disparity between the developed and developing nations is in virtually all sectors, is increasingly becoming more complex and alarming. This is even more serious and glaring in the information technology sector, where there is clear threat of exclusion as well as isolation. As Nigeria braces up for the information technology era, Jigawa State thrives to be identified at the forefront of its development.  The State has the desire to pursue the implementation of an elaborate IT policy and hence the Broadband Network project. The project is very flexible, scalable and designed to grow with time. It is a multi-purpose communication project designed to provide efficient and reliable means of communication. It will also serve as the platform for the development of an IT manpower base.
 
The Jigawa Network is controlled by the main earth station located at Dutse with uplink and downlink facilities to the satellite. The Dutse Teleport authenticates and controls all access signals transmitted to and from any system linked to the network.
 
There are a number of terminal satellite stations scattered over given geographical locations. The Jigawa Network also allows multiple teleports, independent of each other. That is why by having a network of terminal earth stations across vast regions, this connectivity project could potentially represent single communication platform to be reckoned with in the African

Satellite technology is often the preferred choice for a variety of telecommunications applications such as transaction-oriented or point-of sale networks, IP multicasting and backbone connectivity, television Broadcast distribution, and basic voice and data communications where the terrestrial infrastructure is either insufficient or non-existent.
 
It is now possible to address emerging wideband multimedia applications with new advances in VSAT technology, extending terrestrial infrastructure over large geographic areas seamlessly.
 
The project in addition to its anticipated social services to the people of Jigawa State has strong commercial viability because of the tremendous demand in the country for a reliable and cost effective provision of fast internet access and turnkey wide area network connectivity.
